Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent permanent solution to replace missing or non-restorable teeth. Placing and restoring an implant is a process that occurs over the course of a few months. First, the implant is placed in the jaw. Next, the healing process begins. The implant is fabricated from titanium which is very biocompatible, and the bone begins to grow around the implant in a process called osseointegration. The healing time can take 3-6 months, but it is very import that the implant is fully integrated to support biting and chewing. Finally, it is time to restore the implant. The dentist will fabricate a custom crown designed to blend in with your other teeth. The implant process may seem long, but the results are well worth it!

If a patient has an existing denture or is treatment planned for a denture, implants may be suggested to improve the denture's retention. The same process as above is followed, and the implants are placed in the jaw, under the denture. After adequate healing time, the implant is fitted with an attachment that snaps together with a matching piece that is placed inside of the denture (think of two puzzle pieces fitting together). The denture can still be removed, but it will have a snug fit that will improve it's retention during eating, speaking and smiling.
